How to Make Gravity Aluminum Casting

Aluminum casting refers to the metal products obtained by melting pure aluminum or aluminum alloy ingots in crucible or medium-frequency furnace and casting them into mold cavity.Generally, sand mold or metal mold is used to heat liquid aluminum or aluminum alloy poured into the mold cavity, and the various shapes and sizes of aluminum parts or aluminum alloy parts.
Aluminum casting technology is mainly divided into gravity casting, die casting, sand casting, precision casting.
Both ferrous metal and most nonferrous alloy castings can be produced by sand casting.The molding sand used in the sand casting process is simple and easy to obtain.For a long time, it has been the most basic casting process.However, the casting surface quality is rough, and the size grade can only reach CT13 or so.
Precision casting, commonly known as wax-loss casting, is suitable for complex small pieces, casting quality precision is relatively high, but aluminum parts sand cleaning is difficult, the cost is relatively high.
Die casting is a metal casting process characterized by the use of mold cavity to apply high pressure to molten metal.Die casting is especially suitable for manufacturing a large number of small and medium-sized thin castings, so die casting is one of the most widely used casting processes.Compared with other casting techniques, die casting has a smoother surface and higher dimensional consistency.
Gravity casting is a process in which molten aluminum is injected into a mold under the action of gravity.
Generally, metal mold (steel mold) is used for Gravity Casting, and its mold is made of heat-resistant alloy steel. The strength, size and appearance of aluminum castings are higher than those of other casting processes.
Gravity casting process takes the advantage of the weight of the metal liquid filled cavity and finishes melting,pouring,cleaning and shot blasting by gravity casting machine.If necessary,we will do heat treatment and machining.The characteristics of aluminum alloy gravity castings are as follows:
  1. Higher surface finish and higher compactness.
  2. Few internal pores, heat treatment can be carried out.Higher elongation.
  3. High mold cost and long service life.
  4. High production efficiency, thus reducing production costs.
  5. Simple process and strong adaptability.
The process selection is mainly based on the wall thickness of the workpieces.When the wall thickness of Aluminum castings is greater than 8mm, die casting will cause a lot of pores in the wall, so when the thick wall of Aluminum castings is less than 8mm, gravity casting process can be considered.

How to start welding

Welding, also known as welding and splicing, is a manufacturing process and technique for joining metals or other thermoplastic materials such as plastics in a heated, high temperature or high pressure manner.
Metal welding, according to the characteristics of its process, there are three major categories of welding, pressure welding and brazing.


It is a method of heating the workpiece interface to a molten state during the welding process and completing the welding without pressure. During fusion welding, the heat source rapidly heats and melts the interface of the two workpieces to be welded to form a molten pool. The molten pool moves forward with the heat source, and after cooling, forms a continuous weld to join the two workpieces into one body.


Under pressure conditions, the two workpieces achieve atomic bonding in the solid state, also known as solid state welding. The commonly used pressure welding process is resistance butt welding. When the current passes through the connection end of the two workpieces, the temperature rises due to the large resistance, and when heated to the plastic state, the connection is integrated under the axial pressure.


The metal material having a lower melting point than the workpiece is used as a brazing material, and the workpiece and the brazing material are heated to a temperature higher than the melting point of the brazing material and lower than the melting point of the workpiece, and the workpiece is wetted by the liquid brazing material, filling the interface gap and realizing the atomic interaction with the workpiece. The method of mutual diffusion, thereby achieving welding.


The temperature of the molten pool directly affects the quality of welding, the temperature of the molten pool is high, the molten pool is large, the fluidity of molten iron is good, and it is easy to fuse. However, when the temperature is too high, the molten iron is easy to smash, and the back surface of the double-sided forming is easy to burn through. The weld is not difficult to control, and the joint plasticity is reduced, and the bending is easy to crack. When the temperature of the molten pool is low, the molten pool is small, the molten iron is dark, the fluidity is poor, and defects such as incomplete penetration, unmelting, and slag inclusion are easily generated.
The temperature of the molten pool is closely related to the welding current, the diameter of the welding rod, the angle of the welding rod, the burning time of the arc, etc. The following measures are taken to control the temperature of the molten pool for relevant factors.
